As humans, we are biased by design. Our intricate brains have developed these shortcuts through centuries of evolution, and many of our biases are indispensable. They reduce an unimaginable load of paralyzing decisions, keep us alive, and help us navigate the complex world. However, these biases also affect how we approach modern technology. Understanding the theories behind how they work and why some of these biases exist is the key to unlocking their power and supercharging our research and design.

I will cover some theories about how the brain works to help better understand where these biases come from. Then, we will review how some of these mental shortcuts affect our reactions to software and look at common biases that affect our participants and our research, as well as tips for reducing bias in those situations.
